HomeSchoolers Aggregate Online is a fan creation that began in October 2006 with some short, text based “advertisements” for an online program for home schooled students. The videos shared the strict rules that participants need to follow in order to remain in the program. Many viewers questioned the relationship of these videos and the [http://hsao.net/ HSA website] to the Lonelygirl15 production. Fans soon realized that the videos and site were an independent production that ran parallel to Bree’s story. Some viewers speculated that Bree was a former participant of the program due to HSA's strict policies. Others speculated that it was a cult, trying to lure students to enroll. As it turned out, HSA was a game that followed the idea of immersive fiction more that a traditional ARG. The HSA offered no dead-drops or computer codes to break. To participate in HSA, students need to register by the deadline and complete written tasks that often help them find the password to the class notebook, a password-protected message forum. Since HSA discourages students from interacting or socializing, the message forum is the place where students leave the answers to their “assignments.” Assignments range from replying to philosophical theories, making personal connections to philosophical ideas, responding to specific pieces of art, and even, creating and sharing one’s own art work.

Students find the assignments posted on the website. Videos either reinforce a lesson’s focus, provide insight to an area of examination or offer clues to the participants to figure out the assignment’s password. At HSA, when students solve the password and are ready to post their answer in the notebook, they are said to “Bring It” to the notebook. Students who are interested are free to post their own in-character blogs that link off the HSA website.

The head of school is a woman known as Rose Marie Crandall Crowley Kelly, who is married to Phillip Crowley (no relation to Aleister). She is a very strict, yet supportive instructor who encourages her students to do their best. She expects students to follow her rules without question, and those who have questioned her have had their IP addresses banned from the site. Assignments receive responses from Ms. Kelly and student work is exhibited on the website.

Throughout each term, a back story emerges involving Ms. Kelly’s exploits and those who seem to trying to undo for reasons that remain unclear. The website offers clues, additional character blogs and links. At the end of the term, students are treated to a graduation ceremony video, an on-line yearbook and a certificate of completion. HSA has a small group of followers who seem to enjoy the intellectual stimulation of this game.

This is the first time that HSA’s creator has ever been involved in such a pursuit. Participants have been forgiving and patient as her stories unfold and her skills improve.

The Homeschoolers Aggregate appears to be a secular forum for gifted homeschoolers to receive informal assignments in and to discuss Literary Theory, Poetry, Art, and Moral and Ethical Philosophy. Whether the Aggregate is an accredited institution, and whether it supports other subjects outside the liberal arts, is unknown.

Internet fans of Bree stumbled across the HSAOnline introductory and training videos hosted on YouTube. The source of the lonelyfans' speculation that Bree is/was a student of the Homeschoolers Aggregate is unknown, but several participants of the Tribute to Lonelygirl15 Phorum flocked to register in a new session to be administered by HSAOnline's strict but supportive educator, Ms. Kelly, who continually exhorts the students to "Study up!"

Ms. Kelly and the HSAOnline administrators seem very solicitous regarding the online privacy of their student families. HSAOnline appears to be recovering from some sort of major recent hack, based on some oblique comments from Ms. Kelly.

"It has been suggested that this was the longest graduation speech in history. For a short period, HSAO's director, Ms. Kelly, was institutionalized for reasons that are unclear but vaguely addressed in a video entitled [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0ItOftFyMw Rose Kelly]. There was some speculation as to whether Ms. Kelly suffered from spontaneous combustions. During this period, students were invited along on a train trip by a mysterious host/architect. This train ride turned into a surrealistic and confusing journey that led guests nowhere. Although the lounge, library and drawing room art offered much to occupy the travelers, there was little else to do but watch as guests became frustrated with the host and left one by one. Ms. Kelly jumped off of the train part way through the trip to get back to her family, her school and the consequences she faced for some fraudulent behavior. <br><br>
She vowed to turn things around and applied for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status for her school. Back at the helm, she began planning a new term for her students focused on [http://hsao.net/school.html/ technology and art].

Students spent the term focused on examining technology and art, as well as learning from the examples set by lonelygirl15 in a series of lessons entitled [http://hsao.net/lessonsbree.html Lesson from Bree.] HSA became sponsored by a charitable foundation called [http://continue.to/tiko TiKO.] This foundation is rather mysterious as its sponsors choose to remain anonymous and work under the TiKO name. TiKO demanded that HSA hold a very [http://continue.to/openhouse/ public] Open House so the sponsors could see the work of the school. Some paperwork in Ms. Kelly’s [http://hsao.net/hsaoffice.html office] alluded to some conflict between TiKO’s intentions and Ms. Kelly’s curriculum. Professor Boone also seemed to doing some secretive work for TiKO as stated in some [http://hsao.net/email.jpg emails]found on [http://technologicalaspectsofart.blogspot.com/ his site.] Ms. Kelly explained to her current class that she was concerned about continued funding for her non-profit school. The head of school is a woman known as Rose Marie Crandall Crowley Kelly, who is married to Phillip Crowley (no relation to Aleister). She is a very strict, yet supportive instructor who encourages her students to do their best. She expects students to follow her rules without question, and those who have questioned her have had their IP addresses banned from the site. Assignments receive responses from Ms. Kelly and student work is exhibited on the website.

Throughout each term, a back story emerges involving Ms. Kelly’s exploits and those who seem to trying to undo for reasons that remain unclear. The website offers clues, additional character blogs and links. At the end of the term, students are treated to a graduation ceremony video, an on-line yearbook and a certificate of completion. HSA has a small group of followers who seem to enjoy the intellectual stimulation of this game.

This is the first time that HSA’s creator has ever been involved in such a pursuit. Participants have been forgiving and patient as her stories unfold and her skills improve.

The Homeschoolers Aggregate appears to be a secular forum for gifted homeschoolers to receive informal assignments in and to discuss Literary Theory, Poetry, Art, and Moral and Ethical Philosophy. Whether the Aggregate is an accredited institution, and whether it supports other subjects outside the liberal arts, is unknown.

Internet fans of Bree stumbled across the HSAOnline introductory and training videos hosted on YouTube. The source of the lonelyfans' speculation that Bree is/was a student of the Homeschoolers Aggregate is unknown, but several participants of the Tribute to Lonelygirl15 Phorum flocked to register in a new session to be administered by HSAOnline's strict but supportive educator, Ms. Kelly, who continually exhorts the students to "Study up!"

Ms. Kelly and the HSAOnline administrators seem very solicitous regarding the online privacy of their student families. HSAOnline appears to be recovering from some sort of major recent hack, based on some oblique comments from Ms. Kelly.

For a short period, HSAO's director, Ms. Kelly, was institutionalized for reasons that are unclear but vaguely addressed in a video entitled [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0ItOftFyMw Rose Kelly]. There was some speculation as to whether Ms. Kelly suffered from spontaneous combustions. During this period, students were invited along on a train trip by a mysterious host/architect. This train ride turned into a surrealistic and confusing journey that led guests nowhere. Although the lounge, library and drawing room art offered much to occupy the travelers, there was little else to do but watch as guests became frustrated with the host and left one by one. Ms. Kelly jumped off of the train part way through the trip to get back to her family, her school and the consequences she faced for some fraudulent behavior. <br><br>

[[The Creators]] of [[lonelygirl15]] appreciate all the effort put forth by the fans to make the [[LGpedia]] the trove of LG15 information that it has become. They now charge the [[LGpedia]] community with a new mission: to create a "Story So Far..." section. In a nutshell, they would like a concise yet comprehensive introduction to LG15 for newbies linked to from the main page. The articles [[Breeniverse Timeline]] and [[Down The Rabbit Hole: The Hunt For Bree]] can be a starting-off point for this new viewer summary. [[The Creators]] would like to see what we can come up with by Novemeber 20th. So let's all chip in and see what we can do.

===The Beginning===
On May 24, 2006 the world was changed forever when Bree posted her first video as [[Lonelygirl15]]. What appeared to be a posting that showed a curiosity about other "YouTubers' would eventually reveal itself as a serialized Internet drama.

==The Storyline So Far==
Bree was a 16 year old girl. She and her family moved around a lot, having lived in New Zealand, Austrailia, England and the U.S. A very bright and curious girl, Bree had been in public school for short stints, but she found the negative social atmosphere too much to bear. For example, while in high school, she was accused of "doing things" with her science teacher because she asked so many questions about her interest in the stars. Therefore, her parents made the choice to homeschool her. Being homeschooled as a teenager and coming from the strict family that she did, limited the social outlets that could have provided opportunities to make friends. With the help of her one close real life friend, Daniel, she decided to create videoblogs of her experiences. Her friend Daniel edited and uploaded most of her videos.

Although she is extremely bright and inquisitive, Bree's isolated upbringing encourgaed her childlike personality as evidence by her stuffed animal friends, Purple Monkey, Thor the bear and Owen the turtle. She seemed to have few friends growing up; she mentioned a dog in Nottinghamshire, England as a friend and a girl named Cassie, who seemed to be a social outcast. Daniel seemed to be her only connection to typical teenage life. Her quirky video blogs, such as "Proving Science Wrong," short, satirical episodes in which Bree debunks various scientific theories and "Grillz feat. Danielbeast, LG15, P. Monkey, and O'n," in which she, Daniel and her stuffed animal friends answer back "haters" who post negative comments to her videoblogs, demonstrated her wit, intelligence and carefree attitude. For most of these videos, Daniel remained in the background, usually reading on her bed. An exception was in the second "proving Science Wrong" videoblog, in which Daniel spoofs Bree, and she quietly reads in the background spoofing Daniel.

Bree experiences a period of disobeying her parents and sneaks out to a party with Daniel because her parents will not allow her to go. She is caught and grounded for this behavior, and she shares her frustration via videoblogs that she edits and uploads herself. Bree's parents seem to think that Daniel is a negative influence on her, so she is not allowed to see him for a short while. Although Bree missed Daniel's friendship, she is confused by the path of their relationship. With her lack of experience, she is overwhelmed by Daniel's admittance of having a crush on her.

This crush is demonstrated by his camera work and editing of her videolog, "Swimming," which captures Bree's spirit and beauty with undeniable romantic interest on his part. Bree is not sure how to react, but remains committed to their friendship. Other conflicts arise in the relationship between lonelygirl15 and her friend, who she introduced as the DanielBeast. Because Bree's religion plays a major role in her life, any questioning of this religion bothers her. When Daniel questions her family's involvement in their religion, they have a fight that ends up on camera. Bree uploads this video and finds that Daniel has uploaded his own in response to her. This is not the first time that Bree's religion will affect the relationship between the friends. When Bree attends an equinox cereomony with her family instead of having dinner with Daniel, the two friends find themselves in a major fight. Daniel is frustrated because he planned to cook the dinner, and believes Bree's interest in her religion is unnatural for a teen. She is frustrated because her religion has always been a major part of her life. Because Daniel attended a play at Bree's religious summer camp, she is surprised that he would be so negative about something that is so important to her. Bree and Daniel's friendship disintergrates for a while.

Bree's parents seem overbearing, yet concerned about their daughter. Daniel is "banned" from their home, time and time again, for either not complying with her father's wishes or because her family assumes that he is the cause of her rebellious phase.

As time went on we learnt more about her history and about her family. Her family was part of a strict religion later identified as Dendorah. She was well known for her funny videos of proving science wrong and just for being entertaining to watch as a vlog. In september 2006 we found out a little about a ceremony she had been invited to participate in. It was a very closed ceremony that not even her parents could attend, but we didn't know a lot more about it than that. This played in the background for awile but soon became a prominent theme in her and Daniels videos. Things began to get strange and Bree decided that she didn't know enough about the ceremony and backed out. Since then her parents were taken away by a Deacon and by Lucy, Bree's ex-'helper'. Bree and Daniel are now on the run from the Deacons and the religion, while Bree tries to find her parents.

==Early Suspicions==
By the time the [[First Blog / Dorkiness Prevails|first lonelygirl15 vlog]] appeared on YouTube on June 16, [[Bree]] had already developed a large fan base. Two videos had been posted to her account, [[YouTubers Secret Language]] and [[Paytotheorderofofof vs. Dinosaur]], which included references to many popular YouTubers at the time. By friending popular users, such as Paytotheorderofofof and The Wine Kone, and subscribing to hundreds of channels, Bree instantly had a large fan base.

Suspicions that Bree was something other than a 16-year-old homeschooler began almost immediately. In the comments of Bree's first video, some users already questioned whether she was really 16.

More suspicions quickly arose around lonelygirl15. The editing in her videos was distinctive. While most [[vlog|vloggers]] would record one long take and post it without much editing, Bree's videos consisted of dozens of short takes. While not outside the technical capabilities of a smart high schooler, the process seemed unnecessarily time consuming.

Others noted that Bree's video blog was unusually well-lighted. It appeared that Bree employed a technique called [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_light fill lighting] to provide illumination on the part of her face that was in shadows. Still others cited Bree's striking good looks, flawless complexion and distinctive [[Breebrows|eyebrows]] as suspicious.

==Is That a... Story Arc?==
As the series developed, many fans noted that lonelygirl15's videos appeared to have a plot. This alleged storyboarding suggested that lonelygirl15 was working off a script. The videos were more episodic and on-point than most vloggers at the time.

==Enter Bukanator: An Over-Eager Fan==
Amid the comments of Bree's very first video, a YouTube user named [[Bukanator]] commented, "This is wonderful." Bukanator responded favorably to every early video Bree posted, at times defending Bree from critical comments. Bukanator was supposedly a 38-year-old software engineer from San Francisco.

After less than a month of videos, on July 16th, Bukanator announced in the comments of YouTube that he had created a fan site for Bree at [[lonelygirl15.com]]. As Bukanator was supposedly a 38-year-old man, this struck many people as very strange and inappropriate behavior. The site contained a blog of all the videos as well as a [[phorum|forum]] for discussion, which seemed unnecessary since lonelygirl15 had posted relatively few videos at this point. On July 19, the blog Liquid Generation reported that YouTube users looked up the site registration of lonelygirl15.com.

A search in a WHOIS directory revealed that the site had been registered on May 12, 2006, along with lonelygirl15.org and lonelygirl15.net. Since Bree had not posted her first video until May 24 and her first vlog until June 16, it was impossible for a random fan to have registered the site that early. The site had been registered through DomainsByProxy, the default proxy registration site of [http://www.godaddy.com/ GoDaddy.com].

When confronted about this discrepancy, Bukanator claimed that [[Daniel]] had registered the site. Daniel then claimed in YouTube comments that he had been teasing [[Bree]] about how she was going to be a famous vlogger, and he registered the site as a joke. He further claimed that Bukanator had e-mailed him about starting a fan site and so he let him use lonelygirl15.com.

Virtually nobody believed the story. On July 20th, YouTube user [[gohepcat]] became the first to post a video listing arguments that lonelygirl15 was fake, citing the fan site registration, the story arc, the use of fill-lighting and the odd fact that Daniel is allowed in Bree's bedroom with the door closed.

==Enter Crowley: An Unlikely Icon==

In the video, [[What Did Daniel and Dad Talk About?]], posted on YouTube on August 6, 2006, Daniel begins lighting candles around Bree's room. When he walks to Bree's bookshelf, the image above the candles is briefly, but clearly shown on camera. Bree scolds Daniel when he attempts to light the candles. Viewers of the video on YouTube quickly identified the image as [[Aleister Crowley]].

Bree had mentioned in previous videos that her parent's were strictly [[Bree's religion|religious]]. In the comments to her videos on YouTube she went so far as to identify her religion as non-Christian, but claimed reluctance to share more information as she suspected viewers would not be kind. Only a very small number of viewers had seen the YouTube comment that Bree was not Christian, so the Crowley picture was extremely surprising.

Within days, a video called [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K66l7DRUHBE Lonelygirl15 is a Satanist] appeared on YouTube inaccurately linking Crowley to Satanism and Adolf Hitler. The video went on to claim that lonelygirl15 was a promotion for museumofhoaxes.com, the first of many wildly inaccurate theories on the production.

A thread on Bree's religion became the first active thread at [[lonelygirl15.com]]'s [[phorum]]. Over the course of the next few weeks hundreds of fans registered at the phorum and the frenzied posting and media storm which eventually led to Bree's outing began.

==In the Eye of the Media Storm==
With the appearance of Aleister Crowley, the suspicion about the Web site, and the growing amount of media attention, beginning with [[Virginia Heffernan]]'s late July blog, the search for lonelygirl reached a frenzy in mid-August. Beginning with [[HyeMew]] on Aug. 7, first dozens and soon hundreds of fans registered at the [[phorum]] and began attempts to solve the mystery.

Fans were led astray by a number of red-herring theories. For a long-period of time, many believed that film-maker [[Brian Flemming]] who had written about LG in his blog was the main suspect, and that the videos were part of an upcoming movie. Many suspected that the project was viral-marketing for a Hollywood film, such as an upcoming film [[Pattern Recognition]] based on a novel that has similarities to the lonelygirl15 production. Upcoming horror movies were also suspects, such as The Grudge II.

As new theories surfaced, journalists like [[Jon Fine]], [[Richard Rushfield]] and [[Virginia Heffernan]] raced to get denials from accused parties. A number of actresses were falsely identified as Bree, despite sometimes bearing only the vaguest resemblance, including several actresses known to Brian Flemming, several small-time actresses on MySpace, and even the well-known British actress Jodi Albert. Users such as [[T]] and Bree's top on MySpace, also caused diversions.

Despite the abundance of false theories, information about the videos was slowly discovered:
*On August 28, poster Flwright, an architect, opined from the appearance of the rooms that the videos were filmed in apartment buildings instead of detached single family housing, suggesting that the videos were an amateur production.
*On August 29 a report of a botanist that the [[My Parents... Let Us Go Hiking!!!|Hiking video]] had likely taken place in central to southern California was posted. This was the first concrete evidentiary link to California.
*On August 30, a mysterious poster known as Curious Botanist also linked the flora in the new [[Swimming!|Swimming video]] to southern California.
*On September 1, poster scdgoofy uncovered that [[Kenneth Goodfried]], an attorney in Encino, California, had filed to register lonelygirl15 as a trademark on August 21, 2006.

Users also discovered that in several videos Daniel was holding contemporary magazines, and that the calendar in Bree's room, which was widely available at Target, displayed the correct month, establishing that the videos were likely filmed in real time. [[P.Monkey]], [[Owen]], and much of the contents of Bree's room were also found to be available at Target.

Journalists and bloggers wrote about each discovery, and as the phenomenon grew, the phorum became increasingly unreadable. Members of the phorum and the media, many who were spending their entire days trying to unearth clues became increasingly frustrated.

== September 2006 ==

==The Rise of the Phorum 3==
Toward the end of August, a group of users decided that the phorum was compromised and that further attempts to discover Bree's identity would require plotting outside of the phorum. A group of 6 phorum members exchanged Instant Messenger contacts and developed a plot to capture Bree's IP address. The group eventually became known as the [[Phorum 3]] as their numbers dwindled.

One member of the original 6 immediately notified Bree and Daniel of the trap, which he felt went too far. Another member refused to participate, feeling that the IP trapping crossed a line. The [[Phorum 3]], led by a poster named [[Jessica]] nevertheless acquired an IP address they believed to be Bree's. By running trace-route software from various parts of the world, the Phorum 3 believed they had located Bree.

On an Aug. 31 post, Jessica, the leader of the Phorum 3, said that the IP address pointed to Mountain View, California, which she incorrectly believed was the same as San Mateo. Jessica suggested that the most likely explanation for Bree's videos was that they were created by [[YouTube]] itself, which is based in San Mateo.

Although her theory was completely incorrect, it was cited in several media outlets as likely. Also on Aug. 31, [[Jon Fine]] of Business Week, [http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/FineOnMedia/archives/2006/08/lonelygirl15_co.html published his theory] that lonelygirl15 was "created by a small coterie of creative types." Fine's article used only anonymous sources, and it is unknown how much he actually knew. The noise generated from the [[Phorum 3]]'s false theory, nevertheless drowned out Fine's correct theory.

The phorum descended into chaos as users argued about the accusations made against YouTube. Starting on Sept. 4, posters began to abandon the phorum and relocated to a new fan site known as [[The Children of Anchor Cove|Alissa's Lonelygirl phorum]]. Within a few days, the phorum was empty, and was soon replaced by a new PHPbb supported forum.

==The CAA Connection==
As the YouTube theory unraveled, the [[Phorum 3]] secretly set-up a new trap, using a newly created MySpace page. On the MySpace page they layed a bug, which would record the IP address of anyone who visited. Claiming to be a 14-year-old boy, they sent a message to Bree's MySpace account. Within a couple of hours, Bree sent a message in reply. Only one person had ever visited the newly created MySpace page -- and their IP address traced to the [[Creative Artists Agency]], one of the biggest Hollywood talent agencies.

The Phorum 3 went to Richard Rushfield of the LA Times with their discovery. Rushfield presumably e-mailed lonelygirl15 for comment. Nobody replied to Rushfield, but on the evening of Sept. 7, [[A Message From The Creators]] appeared on the now-abandoned lonelygirl15.com Web site. The message included little information, beyond saying that lonelygirl15 was a small production. A few hours later, Rushfield's story appeared on the LA Times Web site, linking the production to the Creative Artists Agency. The story was quickly spread by other media outlets, many fans were unhappy with the Creators message, and some early fans lost interest. But the uproar attracted a new generation of fans to the series, and the hunt for Bree, who remained unidentified, continued.

==The Final Nail==
The [[A Message From The Creators|Message From The Creators]], which was supposed to have drawn fans away from their hunt for Bree's true identity, only intensified the search. Pictures of Bree appeared in newspapers and blogs across the world. The final nail in the coffin, came from a Sept. 9 post on the blog TMZ.com, [http://www.tmz.com/2006/09/09/lonelygirl15-aint-so-lonely-anymore lonelygirl15 aint so lonely anymore]. TMZ claimed to know the hilarious secret behind the series, but never explained what that secret was.

The celebrity-obsessed crowd at TMZ was not interested in anything except drunken actors like Mel Gibson or Paris Hilton. On Sept. 10, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a user named Jeremy made the following post on TMZ.com:

The link provided linked to the MySpace profile of "[[Jessica Lee Rose|Jess Rose]]", but the profile was set on private, and the profile picture was only of someone's mouth.

At 1:16 a.m. Eastern Time, on Sept. 12, a poster at [[The Children of Anchor Cove]] fan site known only as Ennovi, used Google Cache to find an old version of the MySpace profile which included the information that Jessica Rose was a 19-year-old aspiring actress from New Zealand, who had set her profile private shortly before the lonelygirl15 series began. Throughout the day, more pictures of Jessica Rose were discovered.

Later that day the Silicon Valley Watcher blog discovered pictures of Jess Rose on Google that linked to the Clyne Management agency in New Zealand. YouTube user mgpapas, discovered a cached version of Jess Rose's photobucket account and quickly posted a [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU8iYeAzL1U montage of the pictures] on YouTube. Both mgpapas and Silicon Valley Watcher claimed full-credit for discovering Bree's identity, even though what they really found were simply additional pictures.

By the evening of Sept. 12, Virginia Heffernan had published photos of Bree, and fleshed out details of the story received from an interview with [[Grant Steinfeld]]. [[Richard Rushfield]] at the Los Angeles Times, also published the first interview with [[The Creators]] where they revealed themselves as [[Miles Beckett]], [[Mesh Flinders]], and [[Greg Goodfried]]. For the next several days, the cast and crew appeared in numerous television interviews.

By Sept. 13, [[Yousef Abu-Taleb]] was also identified and appeared in a number of television interviews.

While some fans who were only interested in the mystery lost interest, a new generation of fans found the lonelygirl15 story and fell for Bree (even if her real name was Jess), became entangled in the mysteries of [[Cassieiswatching]], and joined the community at the lonelygirl15.com Web site.

Throughout the hunt, the [[Breeniverse]] was relatively undisturbed by the developing news. Later in the day on Sept. 13 the video [[In The Park]] appeared. The secret was out. The hunt for Bree was over, but the story of Bree continued.

They now charge the [[LGpedia]] community with a new mission: to create a "Story So Far..." section. In a nutshell, they would like a concise yet comprehensive introduction to LG15 for newbies linked to from the main page. The articles [[Breeniverse Timeline]] and [[Down The Rabbit Hole: The Hunt For Bree]] can be a starting-off point for this new viewer summary. ===The Beginning===
On May 24, 2006 the world was changed forever when Bree posted her first video as [[Lonelygirl15]]. What appeared to be a posting that showed a curiosity about other "YouTubers' would eventually reveal itself as a serialized Internet drama.

==The Storyline So Far==
Bree was a 16 year old girl. She and her family moved around a lot, having lived in New Zealand, Austrailia, England and the U.S. A very bright and curious girl, Bree had been in public school for short stints, but she found the negative social atmosphere too much to bear. For example, while in high school, she was accused of "doing things" with her science teacher because she asked so many questions about her interest in the stars. Therefore, her parents made the choice to homeschool her. Being homeschooled as a teenager and coming from the strict family that she did, limited the social outlets that could have provided opportunities to make friends. With the help of her one close real life friend, Daniel, she decided to create videoblogs of her experiences. Her friend Daniel edited and uploaded most of her videos.

Although she is extremely bright and inquisitive, Bree's isolated upbringing encourgaed her childlike personality as evidence by her stuffed animal friends, Purple Monkey, Thor the bear and Owen the turtle. She seemed to have few friends growing up; she mentioned a dog in Nottinghamshire, England as a friend and a girl named Cassie, who seemed to be a social outcast. Daniel seemed to be her only connection to typical teenage life. Her quirky video blogs, such as "Proving Science Wrong" and "Bree the Cookie Monster" demonstrated her wit, intelligence and carefree attitude. For most of these videos, Daniel remained in the background, usually reading on her bed.

Bree goes through a period of disobeying her parents and sneaks out to a party with Daniel because her parents will not allow her to go. She is caught and grounded for this behavior, and she shares her frustration via videoblogs tha she edits and uploads herself. Bree's parents seem to think that Daniel is a negative influence on her, so she is not allowed to see him for a short while. Although Bree missed Daniel's friendship, she is confused by the path of their relationship. With her lack of experience, she is overwhelmed by Daniel's admittance of having a crush on her.

This crush is demonstrated by his camera work and editing of her videolog, "Swimming," which captures Bree's spirit and beauty with undeniable romantic interest on his part. Bree is not sure how to react, but remains committed to their friendship. Other conflicts arise in the relationship between lonelygirl15 and her friend, who she introduced as the DanielBeast. Because Bree's religion plays a major role in her life, any questioning of this religion bothers her. When Daniel questions her family's involvement in their religion, they have a fight that ends up on camera. Bree uploads this video and finds that Daniel has uploaded his own in response to her. This is not the first time that Bree's religion will affect the relationship between the friends. When Bree attends an equinox cereomony with her family instead of having dinner with Daniel, the two friends find themselves in a major fight. Daniel is frustrated because he planned to cook the dinner, and believes Bree's interest in her religion is unnatural for a teen. She is frustrated because her religion has always been a major part of her life. Because Daniel attended a play at Bree's religious summer camp, she is surprised that he would be so negative about something that is so important to her. Bree and Daniel's friendship disintergrates for a while.

Bree's parents seem overbearing, yet concerned about their daughter. Daniel is "banned" from their home, time and time again, for either not complying with her father's wishes or because her family assumes that he is the cause of her rebellious phase.

As time went on we learnt more about her history and about her family. Her family was part of a strict religion later identified as Dendorah. She was well known for her funny videos of proving science wrong and just for being entertaining to watch as a vlog. In september 2006 we found out a little about a ceremony she had been invited to participate in. It was a very closed ceremony that not even her parents could attend, but we didn't know a lot more about it than that. This played in the background for awile but soon became a prominent theme in her and Daniels videos. Things began to get strange and Bree decided that she didn't know enough about the ceremony and backed out. Since then her parents were taken away by a Deacon and by Lucy, Bree's ex-'helper'. Bree and Daniel are now on the run from the Deacons and the religion, while Bree tries to find her parents.

==Early Suspicions==
By the time the [[First Blog / Dorkiness Prevails|first lonelygirl15 vlog]] appeared on YouTube on June 16, [[Bree]] had already developed a large fan base. Two videos had been posted to her account, [[YouTubers Secret Language]] and [[Paytotheorderofofof vs. Dinosaur]], which included references to many popular YouTubers at the time. By friending popular users, such as Paytotheorderofofof and The Wine Kone, and subscribing to hundreds of channels, Bree instantly had a large fan base.

Suspicions that Bree was something other than a 16-year-old homeschooler began almost immediately. In the comments of Bree's first video, some users already questioned whether she was really 16.

More suspicions quickly arose around lonelygirl15. The editing in her videos was distinctive. While most [[vlog|vloggers]] would record one long take and post it without much editing, Bree's videos consisted of dozens of short takes. While not outside the technical capabilities of a smart high schooler, the process seemed unnecessarily time consuming.

Others noted that Bree's video blog was unusually well-lighted. It appeared that Bree employed a technique called [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_light fill lighting] to provide illumination on the part of her face that was in shadows. Still others cited Bree's striking good looks, flawless complexion and distinctive [[Breebrows|eyebrows]] as suspicious.

==Is That a... Story Arc?==
As the series developed, many fans noted that lonelygirl15's videos appeared to have a plot. This alleged storyboarding suggested that lonelygirl15 was working off a script. The videos were more episodic and on-point than most vloggers at the time.

==Enter Bukanator: An Over-Eager Fan==
Amid the comments of Bree's very first video, a YouTube user named [[Bukanator]] commented, "This is wonderful." Bukanator responded favorably to every early video Bree posted, at times defending Bree from critical comments. Bukanator was supposedly a 38-year-old software engineer from San Francisco.

After less than a month of videos, on July 16th, Bukanator announced in the comments of YouTube that he had created a fan site for Bree at [[lonelygirl15.com]]. As Bukanator was supposedly a 38-year-old man, this struck many people as very strange and inappropriate behavior. The site contained a blog of all the videos as well as a [[phorum|forum]] for discussion, which seemed unnecessary since lonelygirl15 had posted relatively few videos at this point. On July 19, the blog Liquid Generation reported that YouTube users looked up the site registration of lonelygirl15.com.

A search in a WHOIS directory revealed that the site had been registered on May 12, 2006, along with lonelygirl15.org and lonelygirl15.net. Since Bree had not posted her first video until May 24 and her first vlog until June 16, it was impossible for a random fan to have registered the site that early. The site had been registered through DomainsByProxy, the default proxy registration site of [http://www.godaddy.com/ GoDaddy.com].

When confronted about this discrepancy, Bukanator claimed that [[Daniel]] had registered the site. Daniel then claimed in YouTube comments that he had been teasing [[Bree]] about how she was going to be a famous vlogger, and he registered the site as a joke. He further claimed that Bukanator had e-mailed him about starting a fan site and so he let him use lonelygirl15.com.

Virtually nobody believed the story. On July 20th, YouTube user [[gohepcat]] became the first to post a video listing arguments that lonelygirl15 was fake, citing the fan site registration, the story arc, the use of fill-lighting and the odd fact that Daniel is allowed in Bree's bedroom with the door closed.

==Enter Crowley: An Unlikely Icon==

In the video, [[What Did Daniel and Dad Talk About?]], posted on YouTube on August 6, 2006, Daniel begins lighting candles around Bree's room. When he walks to Bree's bookshelf, the image above the candles is briefly, but clearly shown on camera. Bree scolds Daniel when he attempts to light the candles. Viewers of the video on YouTube quickly identified the image as [[Aleister Crowley]].

Bree had mentioned in previous videos that her parent's were strictly [[Bree's religion|religious]]. In the comments to her videos on YouTube she went so far as to identify her religion as non-Christian, but claimed reluctance to share more information as she suspected viewers would not be kind. Only a very small number of viewers had seen the YouTube comment that Bree was not Christian, so the Crowley picture was extremely surprising.

Within days, a video called [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K66l7DRUHBE Lonelygirl15 is a Satanist] appeared on YouTube inaccurately linking Crowley to Satanism and Adolf Hitler. The video went on to claim that lonelygirl15 was a promotion for museumofhoaxes.com, the first of many wildly inaccurate theories on the production.

A thread on Bree's religion became the first active thread at [[lonelygirl15.com]]'s [[phorum]]. Over the course of the next few weeks hundreds of fans registered at the phorum and the frenzied posting and media storm which eventually led to Bree's outing began.

==In the Eye of the Media Storm==
With the appearance of Aleister Crowley, the suspicion about the Web site, and the growing amount of media attention, beginning with [[Virginia Heffernan]]'s late July blog, the search for lonelygirl reached a frenzy in mid-August. Beginning with [[HyeMew]] on Aug. 7, first dozens and soon hundreds of fans registered at the [[phorum]] and began attempts to solve the mystery.

Fans were led astray by a number of red-herring theories. For a long-period of time, many believed that film-maker [[Brian Flemming]] who had written about LG in his blog was the main suspect, and that the videos were part of an upcoming movie. Many suspected that the project was viral-marketing for a Hollywood film, such as an upcoming film [[Pattern Recognition]] based on a novel that has similarities to the lonelygirl15 production. Upcoming horror movies were also suspects, such as The Grudge II.

As new theories surfaced, journalists like [[Jon Fine]], [[Richard Rushfield]] and [[Virginia Heffernan]] raced to get denials from accused parties. A number of actresses were falsely identified as Bree, despite sometimes bearing only the vaguest resemblance, including several actresses known to Brian Flemming, several small-time actresses on MySpace, and even the well-known British actress Jodi Albert. Users such as [[T]] and Bree's top on MySpace, also caused diversions.

Despite the abundance of false theories, information about the videos was slowly discovered:
*On August 28, poster Flwright, an architect, opined from the appearance of the rooms that the videos were filmed in apartment buildings instead of detached single family housing, suggesting that the videos were an amateur production.
*On August 29 a report of a botanist that the [[My Parents... Let Us Go Hiking!!!|Hiking video]] had likely taken place in central to southern California was posted. This was the first concrete evidentiary link to California.
*On August 30, a mysterious poster known as Curious Botanist also linked the flora in the new [[Swimming!|Swimming video]] to southern California.
*On September 1, poster scdgoofy uncovered that [[Kenneth Goodfried]], an attorney in Encino, California, had filed to register lonelygirl15 as a trademark on August 21, 2006.

Users also discovered that in several videos Daniel was holding contemporary magazines, and that the calendar in Bree's room, which was widely available at Target, displayed the correct month, establishing that the videos were likely filmed in real time. [[P.Monkey]], [[Owen]], and much of the contents of Bree's room were also found to be available at Target.

Journalists and bloggers wrote about each discovery, and as the phenomenon grew, the phorum became increasingly unreadable. Members of the phorum and the media, many who were spending their entire days trying to unearth clues became increasingly frustrated.

==The Rise of the Phorum 3==
Toward the end of August, a group of users decided that the phorum was compromised and that further attempts to discover Bree's identity would require plotting outside of the phorum. A group of 6 phorum members exchanged Instant Messenger contacts and developed a plot to capture Bree's IP address. The group eventually became known as the [[Phorum 3]] as their numbers dwindled.

One member of the original 6 immediately notified Bree and Daniel of the trap, which he felt went too far. Another member refused to participate, feeling that the IP trapping crossed a line. The [[Phorum 3]], led by a poster named [[Jessica]] nevertheless acquired an IP address they believed to be Bree's. By running trace-route software from various parts of the world, the Phorum 3 believed they had located Bree.

On an Aug. 31 post, Jessica, the leader of the Phorum 3, said that the IP address pointed to Mountain View, California, which she incorrectly believed was the same as San Mateo. Jessica suggested that the most likely explanation for Bree's videos was that they were created by [[YouTube]] itself, which is based in San Mateo.

Although her theory was completely incorrect, it was cited in several media outlets as likely. Also on Aug. 31, [[Jon Fine]] of Business Week, [http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/FineOnMedia/archives/2006/08/lonelygirl15_co.html published his theory] that lonelygirl15 was "created by a small coterie of creative types." Fine's article used only anonymous sources, and it is unknown how much he actually knew. The noise generated from the [[Phorum 3]]'s false theory, nevertheless drowned out Fine's correct theory.

The phorum descended into chaos as users argued about the accusations made against YouTube. Starting on Sept. 4, posters began to abandon the phorum and relocated to a new fan site known as [[The Children of Anchor Cove|Alissa's Lonelygirl phorum]]. Within a few days, the phorum was empty, and was soon replaced by a new PHPbb supported forum.

==The CAA Connection==
As the YouTube theory unraveled, the [[Phorum 3]] secretly set-up a new trap, using a newly created MySpace page. On the MySpace page they layed a bug, which would record the IP address of anyone who visited. Claiming to be a 14-year-old boy, they sent a message to Bree's MySpace account. Within a couple of hours, Bree sent a message in reply. Only one person had ever visited the newly created MySpace page -- and their IP address traced to the [[Creative Artists Agency]], one of the biggest Hollywood talent agencies.

The Phorum 3 went to Richard Rushfield of the LA Times with their discovery. Rushfield presumably e-mailed lonelygirl15 for comment. Nobody replied to Rushfield, but on the evening of Sept. 7, [[A Message From The Creators]] appeared on the now-abandoned lonelygirl15.com Web site. The message included little information, beyond saying that lonelygirl15 was a small production. A few hours later, Rushfield's story appeared on the LA Times Web site, linking the production to the Creative Artists Agency. The story was quickly spread by other media outlets, many fans were unhappy with the Creators message, and some early fans lost interest. But the uproar attracted a new generation of fans to the series, and the hunt for Bree, who remained unidentified, continued.

==The Final Nail==
The [[A Message From The Creators|Message From The Creators]], which was supposed to have drawn fans away from their hunt for Bree's true identity, only intensified the search. Pictures of Bree appeared in newspapers and blogs across the world. The final nail in the coffin, came from a Sept. 9 post on the blog TMZ.com, [http://www.tmz.com/2006/09/09/lonelygirl15-aint-so-lonely-anymore lonelygirl15 aint so lonely anymore]. TMZ claimed to know the hilarious secret behind the series, but never explained what that secret was.

The celebrity-obsessed crowd at TMZ was not interested in anything except drunken actors like Mel Gibson or Paris Hilton. On Sept. 10, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a user named Jeremy made the following post on TMZ.com:

The link provided linked to the MySpace profile of "[[Jessica Lee Rose|Jess Rose]]", but the profile was set on private, and the profile picture was only of someone's mouth.

At 1:16 a.m. Eastern Time, on Sept. 12, a poster at [[The Children of Anchor Cove]] fan site known only as Ennovi, used Google Cache to find an old version of the MySpace profile which included the information that Jessica Rose was a 19-year-old aspiring actress from New Zealand, who had set her profile private shortly before the lonelygirl15 series began. Throughout the day, more pictures of Jessica Rose were discovered.

Later that day the Silicon Valley Watcher blog discovered pictures of Jess Rose on Google that linked to the Clyne Management agency in New Zealand. YouTube user mgpapas, discovered a cached version of Jess Rose's photobucket account and quickly posted a [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU8iYeAzL1U montage of the pictures] on YouTube. Both mgpapas and Silicon Valley Watcher claimed full-credit for discovering Bree's identity, even though what they really found were simply additional pictures.

By the evening of Sept. 12, Virginia Heffernan had published photos of Bree, and fleshed out details of the story received from an interview with [[Grant Steinfeld]]. [[Richard Rushfield]] at the Los Angeles Times, also published the first interview with [[The Creators]] where they revealed themselves as [[Miles Beckett]], [[Mesh Flinders]], and [[Greg Goodfried]]. For the next several days, the cast and crew appeared in numerous television interviews.

By Sept. 13, [[Yousef Abu-Taleb]] was also identified and appeared in a number of television interviews.

While some fans who were only interested in the mystery lost interest, a new generation of fans found the lonelygirl15 story and fell for Bree (even if her real name was Jess), became entangled in the mysteries of [[Cassieiswatching]], and joined the community at the lonelygirl15.com Web site.

Throughout the hunt, the [[Breeniverse]] was relatively undisturbed by the developing news. Later in the day on Sept. 13 the video [[In The Park]] appeared. The secret was out. The hunt for Bree was over, but the story of Bree continued.
