Some fans initially suspected that lonelygirl15 was an Alternate Reality Game, a type of game that overlaps the game world with reality, by utilizing real world media, such as YouTube, phone calls, or blogs, to deliver an interactive media experience with players. The people who run an ARG are often referred to as "puppet masters".
For a while, OpAphid was the official ARG of Lonelygirl15. However, this is no longer the case. It has now seperated from lonelygirl15 and merged with the fan ARG Maddison Atkins, creating the new ARG redearth88. Other ARGs related to lonelygirl15 are The Homeschoolers Aggregate and Facility J.

- IRC: a chat program often utilized during drops and to solve puzles in order to stay up-to-the-minute
- The curtain: It represents who is behind the scenes, everything behind the curtain (oog), doesn't exist in front of the curtain (ig).
