Cynthia Frady is the twenty-first video in the Maddison Atkins video series. It is also the eighth video of chapter two.

Transcript

Clara: Adam, if you don't mind, I don't want you sittin' there.

Adam: My bad.

Clara: No, it's cool.

Adam: What am I supposed to be doing?

Clara: Well, if you could just go sit over there (points) for me.

Adam: Alright.

Clara: And could you hold this microphone?

Adam: Alright.

Clara: Cynthia, would you mind saying your name for me so I can get some audio?

Cynthia: Cynthia Frady.

Clara: One more time please?

Cynthia: Cynthia Frady.

(Clara adjusts the camera.)

Clara: Okay, now what can you tell me about Joel Frady?

Cynthia: Well, Joel and I were married for about eight years. Um, we had one child, Bethany. She's ten years old now.

Clara: Did he have any visitation rights?

Cynthia: (Laughs) I'm the one who had the visitation. He had custody of her. I saw her twice a month.

Clara: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... pry or intrude...

Cynthia: (Shakes head) That's no problem, honey. We met in '95, and we went together for a while. He made good money; he drove a truck for Budweiser. Next thing you know, I got pregnant. Um, he was happy. I was pissed. I did not want to be a mom. I was selfish. I gave her to him, I jumped on the back of a Harley, I was gone for about six months. I came back and Joel just took me right back in. He was always, uh, forgiving like that. He wanted to get married, so we got married. And eventually, it just wasn't enough. It became, how you say that, plutonic? I had to have more out of a relationship. And I talked to him, and we both just decided that we should go ahead and get a divorce. And um, he got custody of her. I was workin' a lot back then. And besides, he had always been able to love her in a way that I just couldn't.

Clara: Can you tell me about the murders?

Cynthia: He didn't do it. There's just no way he could have done that. First off, he had Bethany. And he spent a lot of time with her. It's runnin' me ragged now all the things that he had her involved in -- piano lessons, dance, gymnastics, Girl Scouts. He took a job as a janitor that had less hours, just so he could spend more time with her. And besides all that, janitor was right up his alley. He was clean, everything had to be clean. He had a thing about germs. (Lights up a cigarette.) He wasn't an animal lover. There was no way he was using pigeons to deliver notes to anybody. He thought pigeons were disgusting! (Laughs) And notes all over the country? He didn't know anybody all over the country. He never left the Piney Woods, and he liked it that way. It was simple. Have you got ahold of Duke yet?

Clara: No.

Cynthia: Okay, you really need to. They were good friends. As a matter of fact, I was going to pick up Bethany that Friday in April, he was supposed to go fishing with Duke. I've got his number if you'd like to talk to him.

Clara: So how are you doing now with Bethany?

Cynthia: Good, we're gettin' along fine. We're gettin' to know each other again. Um, she doesn't know it, but she's rich. After they put Joel away, a man came to me and told me there'd been a trust fund set up for her when she turns 18.

Adam: She's got a trust fund?

Cynthia: She's got a trust fund. I don't tell many people that because they'd be buggin' me for money. But, uh yeah.

Clara: Well, thanks Cynthia I really appreciate you coming out and speaking with me today.

Cynthia: No problem. I'm sorry I wouldn't let you shoot her, but she's really too young for all of this stuff you know.
