Transcript

(Julia and Charlie are in Charlie's car. Julia cleans the camera lens.)

Julia: What's this girl's name again?

Charlie: Lauren.

Julia: And have you decided whether you're gonna tell her or not yet?

Charlie: I wish I had the choice. (Sighs.) "Hello. You don't know me, but, um, we know the doctor that did your drug tests? Oh, guess what? Yeah, his name's Dr. William Griffin, and he's dead. Oh, and look, you don't need to worry about this, but, um, you know the pathogen that he injected you with? Look, it not only made you trait positive, but, uh, it also means you don't have much longer to live. Fancy a coffee?" Something like that? (Shakes her head.) God...

Anyway, thanks for coming with me, Jules. Are we okay for time?

Julia: Yeah. No, no, it's fine. I just really didn't think I'd spend my bank holiday like this. Doesn't matter, anyway; the guy I'm seeing's busy. (Charlie rolls her eyes.) Can you believe I was gonna work the whole Easter?

Charlie: Are you guys really on strike?

Julia: Yeah. I'm not quite sure how long for, though. I think we're just gonna let Justin sweat for a bit. Anyway, I got this. (Cut to Julia with the camera on herself.) I can flog it, get paid.

(Julia turns the camera back to Charlie, who is smiling.)

Charlie: What about this new boyfriend of yours, though?

Julia: Charlie...

Charlie: Oh, I mean, who is he?

(Charlie's cell phone rings.)

Julia: I told you I'd tell you when I feel more comfortable.

Charlie: Secrets, secrets.

Julia: I- Is that yours?

Charlie: Yeah, that is me, babe. I think- Can you grab it for me?

Julia: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hold on. Oh! (Grabs Charlie's cell phone from the back seat and sighs.) I missed it. (Looks at the phone, which says there was one missed call from an unknown number.) Here. Sorry.

Charlie: Let me see. Ugh. Again?

Julia: Is it the same person?

Charlie: It's probably just that creepy Steve creeping around again. (Turns to the camera.) Why can't you just speak to me like a normal person, Steve? (Shakes her head.) Creep.

(Cut to both Charlie and Julia getting out of the car.)

Julia: Do you want me to hang back or something?

Charlie: No, we should stay close together. It makes us seem more legit. Come on. (Walks around the car to the sidewalk.) Let's go.

(Cut to Charlie walking on Lauren's street toward her flat.)

Charlie: Here goes nothing. (Sighs.)

(Charlie walks up to the front door of Lauren's flat as Lauren is leaving.)

Charlie: Lauren? Lauren?

Lauren: (Looks at the camera.) Ugh. Christ's sakes, what is wrong with you people?

Charlie: Lauren, I'm sorry. Let- Let me- Look, it's just for me. I know you really don't need this right now.

Lauren: Right. Right. (Pokes the camera.) And you're here to check on the bins again, are you? Filth.

Julia: We're not journalists.

Charlie: Look, please, I just need to talk to you for thirty seconds. Look, the camera's- it's- it's for all of us. It's for our safety. I really need your help. (Lauren stops.) Here's not a good place.

Look, the doctor that did your experiments - he was a phoney. It was all a facade. And you're in danger. You're in real danger. And I know it sounds really messed up, but I don't even know how much time you've got left.

Lauren: Ugh. I know. And there's some crazy people out there, right?

Charlie: Lauren, there's a murderer out there! He killed my friend; he killed my best friend. I can't do this. I'm really sorry, Jules, I can't do this.

Julia: Come on. You've got to tell her.

Charlie: Look, there's something called- You've got an immune system deficiency that you got when you were made trait positive. (Lauren stops and looks shocked.) Okay, I know it sounds crazy, but there are only a couple of clinics that specialize in this treatment. You need to come with me to one of them as soon as you possibly can.

Lauren: (Looks back at her flat.) I need to look after me parents.

Charlie: Look- I can get you in tomorrow and they can come with you. I promise you, you'll be in good hands. Lauren, please.

Lauren: Look...

(Charlie hands Lauren her business card.)

Charlie: It's Charlie.

Lauren: Charlie. Is this where you work? Tomorrow. We'll check it out tomorrow.

Charlie: Please, call me if you need anything. Anything.

(Lauren walks away.)

Notes

  • Charlie's scarf is similar to Steve's.
