(Jennie staples a stack of papers together and places them in a manila folder.)

Jennie: (Whispering.) I'm at the Salinas campaign headquarters. They took me on as a volunteer. (Laughs.) They bought everything I told them; it was incredible.

(Jennie puts aside the folder after putting a campaign button on it. She grabs a pen and starts writing in a notebook.)

I'm working from a back office, just trying to stay out of the way. They say Salinas doesn't come here much, and so far it's been pretty uneventful.

(Cut to Jennie opening a manila folder reading "CAMPAIGN BUTTONS". She dumps them on the desk and begins sorting them. She shows one to the camera, smiling, and gives a thumbs-up. Cut to Jennie putting the button on her shirt. Cut to Jennie sitting down at the desk. She gets out a few folders and writes on them with a permanent marker. Ben reaches over her to grab something off of the desk. Cut to Jennie getting a paper cut. Cut to Jennie using the hole puncher. Cut to a stack of folders being dropped on her desk. She plays with a calculator as a binder gets piled on top of the folders. She makes a futile attempt to take care of the pile of work as more gets stacked on top. She peers over the stack of papers. Cut to Jennie closing her laptop. She rubs her eyes. Cut to Jennie talking to the camera.)

I have to be careful. 'Kay, I'm looking for anything that could bring Salinas down: financial records, contributors, anything. But, you know, I've been so busy trying to win them votes, I haven't even had any time to snoop around.

(Cut to Jennie's purse cam as she enters another office. She looks under papers and on a laptop. Cut to Jennie searching through hanging folders. Cut to Jennie in the kitchen. She opens the fridge. Cut to Ben getting a cup out of a cabinet.)

Jennie: Whoa, hi.

Ben: Hey!

Jennie: How-how are you?

Ben: I'm great, how are you?

Jennie: How many times have you talked to Salinas?

Ben: Sal... Oh, Salinas! Uh, saw him once; he- he waved at me.

(Cut to Jennie at her desk.)

Jennie: There's no way he can be squeaky-clean. Okay, somebody here must know something!

(Jennie jumps at the sound of clapping. She grabs the camera and turns it to see Salinas in the hallway.)

Salinas: I've been wanting to stop by and say "thank you" from the bottom of my heart. Our poll numbers are up, our fund raising is- You know what it is? It's a phenomenon. More than that, our message is getting out. Voters and the media are hearing us. They're hearing that our campaign is different. They're hearing that our message is different and that we will serve everyone, no matter how poor. And that, together, we will build a stronger community. (Salinas smiles and looks at the camera before being swamped by volunteers.) Thank you.

(Cut to Jennie in her office.)

Jennie: Okay, I don't think he saw me. I don't know if I can do this; it's way more complicated than I thought it would--

(Jennie is interrupted as Ross Thompson enters her office.)

Ross: Lisa Goodwin?

Jennie: Uh, yes, that's me.

Ross: Hi. I'm Ross Thompson, the Economic Policy Adviser for the councilman.

Jennie: Hi.

Ross: Hi. It says here you have a background in prenatal care for underprivileged women.

Jennie: Yeah, I guess. I do.

Ross: Excellent. Here's what I need from you: a policy brief on health care and pregnant mothers living in LA.

Jennie: Um... Me? Uh...

Ross: Yeah. Don't worry, you have all night. 6 A.M. tomorrow's fine. (Jennie chokes as she tries to speak.) What?

Jennie: It's just- I-I just- I still have a lot of phone calls to make, and a-all this paperwork to file. I'm just not sure when... when will I have time to write it?

Ross: You'll just have to make time, won't you?

(Ross leaves and Jennie sighs at the camera.)

Jennie: If I want to continue coming here, I have to write that paper. And it has to be good.

Notes

  • The sign behind Jennie counting down the days until the election is reminiscent of the sign that was behind Julia when she worked at JustIncredible.TV in the Kate Modern series.
