Transcript

(Daniel is sitting with Professor DelMundo in his office.)

Professor DelMundo: So, Daniel, tell me. Why should I let you back in?

(Cuts to Daniel sitting in his room in the rented house.)

Daniel: That's Professor DelMundo, my film teacher. Ex-teacher. I figure, now that everything's relatively back to normal, I'll try and get back in class. Again. Unfortunately...

(Cuts back to DelMundo's office.)

Professor DelMundo: I can't teach you. Because to teach you, I'd have to take you seriously. And for me to take you seriously, you have to take you seriously.

(Cuts back to Daniel's room.)

Daniel: When I tried showing him the videos on the site, he wouldn't even look at them.

(Cuts back to DelMundo's office.)

Professor DelMundo: Film, Daniel. This is a film class. Not a "hand everybody a camera and let them masturbate on YouTube" class. The San Fernando Junior College has a long tradition of turning out cinematic storytellers. Award winners, like myself.

(Cuts back to Daniel's room.)

Daniel: You know what? I have seen his work. His "work."

(Cuts to a black and white film for which DelMundo does the voiceover.)

Professor DelMundo (in voiceover): The lovers meet. In the quiet of the night. Deep in the stillness of each others' hearts. But the stillness is not just. And their hearts are not their own. And their love is not the truth. It is blackness. It is desperation.

Spanish Voiceover: Los amantes se encuentran. En la quietud de la noche. Hondo en el sereno de sus propios corazones. (inintelligible because of the english voiceover) en la paz. Y sus corazones no les pertenecen. Y su amor no es la verdad. Es negra oscuridad. Es desesperación.

(Cuts back to Daniel in his room.)

Daniel: Which leads me to my big revelation. I don't need film school to learn my craft. You know who else didn't need film school? Tarantino, Soderbergh, Linklater, Spike Jones. Hell, when John Ford and Frank Capra were out there making movies, and all those other guys, do you think there was even such a thing as film school? No. And what'd they come out with? Amazing movies. "Resevoir Dogs," "Traffic," "Waking Life," "It's A Wonderful Life." Versus what? "Pearl Harbor?" "Norbit?" "Rush Hour 3?" You know what, I should thank you, Professor DelMundo. Thank you. Because without your pompous-ass, crappy, award-winning film, I might have spent the next two years of my life wasted in your stupid class.

Notes

  • The "masturbate on YouTube" comment from Professor DelMundo (which means "of the world" in Spanish) may be a dig at the WeepingWillow17 spoof of lonelygirl15 done by the television show Law & Order, where in one scene a film professor berated a student called "Miles" for the "visual masturbation" of his editing style: Clip criticizing "Miles"
  • Professor DelMundo is played by Marcello Daciano, who has directed many lonelygirl15 videos. Thus, he is poking at himself by criticizing Daniel.
  • Daniel is seen wearing his snake eyes t-shirt in this video.
  • Daniel appears to be caught up in cap fever.
  • Professor DelMundo's film style, with the voiceovers in two different languages and blurry, face-obscuring shots, is eerily similar to LaRezisto's early video's.
  • This is the second reference to Resevoir Dogs in LG15 (The first being Interoggation 101).
