New Main Page

I'm taking the new Main Page live over the next couple minutes. Hooray!--JayHenry 17:05, 4 January 2007 (CST)

And it's up! Yay!--JayHenry 17:15, 4 January 2007 (CST)
Nice! I fixed a couple minor errors I noticed. --Brucker 18:29, 4 January 2007 (CST)
The new main page looks great! I'm very happy all of our hard work paid off. One thing I noticed... the latest developments column is a bit longer, which is invariably going to happen when we have longer video discriptions. However, it's way longer. Maybe we should take off one of the latest videos and add it to the list at the bottom ("Recent Videos"). For instance, we could take off Bree's Gone and add it to the list, to even it up a bit. I'd do it, but I wanted to make sure nobody objected. --Andy 21:29, 4 January 2007 (CST)
Hmm... strange. They line up just right in IE, but in Firefox, the latest developments column is a little bit longer (although only a tiny bit in my browser). That's the general idea behind the Main Page, to move videos into that Recent Video list once the page starts getting too long. By all means, Andy, go ahead and move Bree's Gone down.--JayHenry 21:49, 4 January 2007 (CST)

Further agreement on current style

Okay, so we like five video links at the bottom. How many recent vids with pics at the top? I liked four, but it was recently changed to three. Can we get a consensus? Also, what do people think about my editing down of the description to make a better fit? --Brucker 15:22, 8 January 2007 (CST)

I like the shorter descriptions, if for no other reason than it allows us to keep an extra video on display. I don't think it's necessary for the descriptions to be the official video description. I only used the same variable name so that it could be quickly and easily copied from the video pages. Also, is that OpVid template tested and ready? If so we should add a usage note where it says how to add a new video.--JayHenry 15:23, 8 January 2007 (CST)
I think it (OpVid) looks good, but I haven't heard any feedback yet. Should we post links to the new "Gemma?" videos, or treat them like old videos reposted?
Actually, I feel like the creators are giving us a hard time. Every time we get things figured out, they throw us a curve ball like this. For instance, is The Unthinkable Happened a Bree or Daniel video? --Brucker 15:29, 8 January 2007 (CST)

it would be Daniel and Jonas --Iris2009 15:39, 8 January 2007 (CST)
Actually, I think the craziness on Gemma's account is the perfect opportunity to use the event template. As for The Unthinkable Happened, it's just a call we should make. My thoughts -- although it was posted to the lonelygirl15 account, it was Daniel who wrote the note and did the editing. Hence a Daniel video, and this should be explained in the notes to The Unthinkable Happened. I don't see any reason to label it a Jonas video as well. Although Jonas was in the video, he appears to have neither posted nor edited it. Besides, having a video from two people doesn't work with out Blog3 template. As for the op template, I thought I had commented (although I see now that i didn't) but I like it a lot and think we should use it.--JayHenry 15:51, 8 January 2007 (CST)

I agree--Iris2009 15:58, 8 January 2007 (CST)

Video column

I see Brucker made the change I was just thinking about. I'm aware that the Main Page displays differently in different browsers, but for me in IE or Firefox, having only three videos is always way too few. Before Brucker added the fourth video, there were about three inches of empty space. Is that fourth video making the video column too long in some browsers?--JayHenry 15:59, 15 January 2007 (CST)

Right now I see 4 latest developments (back to PMonkey returns) and 5 recent vids (all the way back to Roadtrip) and it fits perfectly in my crappy IE7. =)

OwenIsCool 16:03, 15 January 2007 (CST)

You know the issue is probably less a matter of which browser than it is a matter of what monitor settings you use. The other night, I checked in here on a different computer and hardly recognized my personal page because the width was different. Maybe we need a "Best viewed at 1024x768" disclaimer?--Brucker 16:41, 15 January 2007 (CST)
Here's the problem with four videos... With three videos, the latest developments column is short, yes, but it matches up and there is just empty space. However, when the latest developments column is too long, it creats this ugly gray space (seems the bottom border is becoming too wide) to make up for it. If we want to keep four videos, then we need to get rid of that ugly gray space and make it match the color of the featured articles box. --Andy 16:44, 15 January 2007 (CST)
Wait, so right now the video page is doing this for you, Andy? Because for me there's over an inch of empty space at the bottom of the video column. That gray box at the bottom of your right column is interesting... I'll experiment on the old redesign page to see if I can fix that. I guess that'd be the best solution for everyone, right?--JayHenry 17:08, 15 January 2007 (CST)
Oh, I see the same thing as Andy. I just hadn't noticed it until he pointed it out. OwenIsCool 17:14, 15 January 2007 (CST)
I think I fixed the problem with the gray space that Andy and OIC noticed. Please let me know if the problem is taken care of now. Just add a bunch of dummy text to the right column and hit "show preview" if you need to.--JayHenry 23:06, 16 January 2007 (CST)
Yeah, I think it's fixed now. Basically, no matter how long I make the right-hand column, the left one matches it and there's no grayspace. Good work! OwenIsCool 13:25, 17 January 2007 (CST)

Spam attack?

This talk page has been hit a half dozen times by a spam bot. The bot will continue to edit this page. The only way to really stop it, is to protect the page. I hate to protect the Talk:Main Page, but I don't really know what else to do. The way the spam bot works is it always attacks the same page from a different IP address. If we protect this page, maybe we can create sort of an FAQ for where noobs can ask questions? And, of course, registered accounts can still ask questions here? Does that seem okay, or does anyone object to protecting this page?--JayHenry 09:56, 27 January 2007 (CST)

No Objection here--Iris2009 10:22, 27 January 2007 (CST)
I was actually thinking we'd need to protect this when I reverted it. Of course I really hate to see the main page talk protected as thats where the shy/new unregistereds are most likely to post. I think we don't have a choice. Can we try protecting the page for a week and then reverting it back to unprotected? Will that even make a difference or will the spam bot still be hitting after a week? Either way.. I also affirm the move to registered users only for this page. --LordGreystoke422 10:36, 27 January 2007 (CST)
A link on the main page directing new users to a page where they can ask questions/post would probably be helpful. The spam bot might eventually pick up on it, but possibly not. --Zak (not registered) 11:08, 27 January 2007 (CST)
Yeah, I'd noticed this page was having problems, but two attacks in a row like that? I think that's reason enough to protect it... even if the newbies have to make an account to post on it. Could we maybe just put a header on top of this page inviting people (again) to create an account so they can post here? OwenIsCool 11:49, 27 January 2007 (CST)

Vid pics

Is there a definite rule about the pictures that represent the videos on the main page, being the same as on their own page? Just wondering, 'cause someone posted a different one for the latest one... ~ Jbshryne 22:34, 30 January 2007 (CST)

No, there's no rule. And there's no rule that the Description has to (or even should be) the same as when they post the video. Generally, it's just been easier to use that boilerplate description and image.--JayHenry 22:38, 30 January 2007 (CST)
I think it's nice to have some variety, and also, certain pictures won't work as well in the smaller format. I think whoever decided on the different picture than I put on the transcript page made a good choice. --Brucker 11:19, 31 January 2007 (CST)

Does anyone else think that maybe it's time to take Gemma off the list of bloggers on the main page? --Andy 14:08, 8 February 2007 (CST)

We discussed this somewhere (found it), and I don't recall reaching a consensus. My argument was that while Gemma is not currently a main character, she has been a main character in the series overall. --Brucker 15:26, 8 February 2007 (CST)
I suggest that we wait and see what happens in the next couple episodes. We're probably looking at the resolution of some of these loose threads. If she's confirmed as dead then I'd agree it's time to remove her. I'm not sure how to redesign the characters box though.--JayHenry 15:38, 8 February 2007 (CST)
That's easy enough, isn't it? Just remove her. Actually, I'd been considering altering the picture to have the text "R.I.P.?" in front of it.--Brucker 15:40, 8 February 2007 (CST)
I dunno. If we remove her the other pictures will be awfully big for my tastes. Either that or we'll have a big chunk of white space. I tried it at the old redesign page: Main Page/redesign. But I think we're potentially looking at Tachyon or Brother or somebody becoming a main character... And that seems better, to add one of them if, of course, the storyline merits. --JayHenry 15:47, 8 February 2007 (CST)
Fiddled around with it. I'm not worried about bigger pictures or white space, or for that matter a solution somewhere in between. I think it all looks good. --Brucker 15:53, 8 February 2007 (CST)
Personally, I think the top one (with the bigger pictures) looks great, if we decide to take Gemma off. --Andy 14:48, 9 February 2007 (CST)
How does it look?--Iris2009 20:51, 13 February 2007 (CST)
Sorry, Iris, but I don't think we agreed to take the picture off yet. I'm sorta thinking it might be necessary to enlarge OpAphid's presence on the Main Page. Perhaps incorporating OpAphid or Tachyon into the character boxes?--JayHenry 23:13, 13 February 2007 (CST)
I disagree with that, just because I feel we should keep OpAphid in a seperate part of the LGpedia (i.e. The AphidPedia). My reasoning for this is the fact that keeping up with OpAphid is supossedly not required to keep up with Lonelygirl15. For instance, I never hopped on the bandwagon and haven't tried to get caught up because it wasn't one of those things were you could just "hop in." Long story short, I doubt I'll be following OpAphid anytime soon, like many other users I'm sure, so from my viewpoint, it's best to keep the LGPedia focused on... well, LG. --Andy 23:59, 13 February 2007 (CST)
sorry i got ahead of myself.Not a bad idea Jay..--Iris2009 14:50, 14 February 2007 (CST)

I think OpAphid needs more prominence given recent developments, but balk at the idea of incorporating the characters from that series into the lg15 info fully unless it becomes fully integrated. I know that we've all been surprised by how much the two story lines have recently overlapped, but my hope is that the Creators will make good on their promise to make OpAphid optional viewing. I watch them, but I honestly don't understand them. --Brucker 16:10, 14 February 2007 (CST)

I dont understand them also. --TJ Marsh 16:11, 14 February 2007 (CST)

Furthermore, in response to what Jay said above, we face the problem of not having definitive pictures of either one of Op or Tachyon, and no picture at all of Brother. --Brucker 17:35, 14 February 2007 (CST)

i got a idea, maybe use i picture from a video that says there name on it? Like when tachyon plane landed, it said tachyon, see what im saying?--TJ Marsh 17:42, 14 February 2007 (CST)

Newby links on main page

What do you think about putting links to The Story So Far and Lonelygirl15Recaps on the main page? Or the recaps as a featured article (though it would need some sprucing up first)? Coming to the main page of the lgpedia as a newby probably still feels overwhelming despite all the great improvements here as of late, unless i'm missing something myself. The LG15 recap vids now go thru Oct 30, which is the 1st 1/2 half of the videos. I only make this as a suggestion. --Milowent 12:36, 13 February 2007 (CST)

Daniel picture

Hi all,
I know it's hard to get a screencap of Daniel. He's either behind the camera, or holding it two inches from his face. However, that hasn't deterred me from trying to find a better picture for his thumbnail on the main page. I looked through some videos and found good "photo ops" in Purple Monkey Returns and For The Ladies. The screencaps I got are below. They would still need to be cropped and tried out in Main page/redesign. However, I first wanted to get a sense of what pictures people liked best, and whether anyone thinks that they are more flattering than the current one. The thumbnails for my suggestions are below. If you know of any good pictures I didn't come up with, add them to the gallery for others to consider. Thanks! OwenIsCool 16:44, 18 February 2007 (CST)

This is for checking the Daniel pics against the Bloggers table. I'm going to go ahead and say my vote's on Option 3 for the time being. OwenIsCool 16:57, 18 February 2007 (CST)

I've cropped two of the images for trying out in the table. There's Option 1 cropped and Option 3 cropped. I like both but I still think 3 is better. OwenIsCool 17:34, 20 February 2007 (CST)

I like the third, myself, and would love to see a different shot of danny on the front page. My only thought is to crop it to the same shape. See how it appears to have white bars on the other three pictures? Daniel sticks out like a sore thumb if you don't. --Chartreuse 00:45, 21 February 2007 (CST)

Thanks for your input, Cartreuse =) I'll fix the cropping. As for the rest of you... does nobody care about Danny? Speak now or forever hold your peace... OwenIsCool 15:20, 25 February 2007 (CST)
It's a good Daniel picture, I always wanted one of him smiling bigger, so that's much better. --Brucker 12:13, 26 February 2007 (CST)
I like option 3 as well --Michiev
Any option we chose, the pic needs to be changed soon. The one we have up there now is very flattering or representative of Daniel. Option 3 seems to be the favorite and I like it too. But, with the possibility of Gemma coming off the "official" list soon (pending consensus), maybe we should wait on messing with the blogger pics. Malan89 20:35, 6 March 2007 (CST)

Image page

I don't exactly know where else to ask this question, but before i found a page full of images used on the LG pedia. i cant seem to find that page again, If anyone could help me i would be really happy :D
